Healthy Aging Summit

The 2010 Healthy Aging Summit was held Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at San Francisco City Hall. A series of thought-provoking keynote speakers started a day filled with practical workshops and fun, interactive displays.
The 2010 Healthy Aging Summit in City Hall, held November 9, 2010, was part of San Francisco’s on-going healthy aging initiatives, drew a crowd of more than 400. Participants heard a range of engaging and thought-provoking speakers, attended diverse workshops held throughout the building and participated in a number of hands-on activities, including a Computer Lab set up in the South Light Court. Mayor Gavin Newsom and State Officials welcomed the Summit attendees who explored San Francisco’s innovative approaches to health and aging. Workshops promoted good nutrition and physical fitness as well as lifelong learning and meaningful community involvement. Participants came away from the day with new perspectives, specific ideas and access to new resources. Morning presenters included:
- Walter M. Bortz II, MD, Stanford University School of Medicine, who presented “Healthy Aging: What It Takes to Have a Good Life”; Michael M. Merzenich, a professor emeritus at UC San Francisco and the co-founder of Posit Science Brain Fitness Software, presented “Brain Fitness and Aging”; and
- Dr. Ted Schettler, of the Science and Environmental Health Network, discussed the “Environmental Threats to Healthy Aging”.
The Summit was a lively experience that broadened awareness of the positive aspects of aging, and provided valuable information that served to help older adults to improve their physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being.
